Need to cancel a Walmart order? Open the order in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com and look for Cancel order. If the option is available, submit the request and check the order status and your email afterward. The cancellation window can close as fulfillment advances. Once the order is being prepared, packed, or shipped, Walmart may only be able to help with a return or delivery issue.

A request is not proof that the order was canceled. Save the confirmation or a status change showing what happened. Walmart says a refund to a credit or debit card can take up to seven business days. A pending authorization hold is different from a completed charge and may disappear according to your bank's procedures. See Walmart's canceled-orders guidance for the company's current explanation.

How to cancel a Walmart order online or in the app

Walmart's labels can differ by app version, order type, and location. The usual route is:

  1. Sign in to the Walmart app or Walmart.com.
  2. Open Account, Purchase History, or Orders.
  3. Select the order.
  4. Look for Manage order, Cancel order, or a similar option.
  5. Choose the item or items to cancel, select a reason, and submit the request.
  6. Reopen the order page and check your email for confirmation.

An order with several items may allow a partial cancellation. Check whether you stopped one item or the entire order, then compare the updated order total with the original.

If the cancellation button is missing, don't assume the order is canceled. Use Walmart's current Help or Contact Us option and ask whether the order can still be stopped. Keep the response, chat transcript, or support reference number.

Pickup and grocery delivery orders

Pickup and store-delivery orders can move quickly from scheduled to prepared. Open the order as soon as you decide not to proceed and look for a cancellation or modification option.

If the option is available, submit it immediately and verify the new status. If the order is already being prepared, self-service cancellation may no longer work. Contact Walmart instead of relying on an unchanged order page.

Perishable goods and prepared grocery orders may have different return or refund handling from ordinary shipped merchandise. Read the instructions in the cancellation or delivery message before discarding, refusing, or returning anything.

What to do after an order has shipped

Once an order is packed or shipped, cancellation is not guaranteed. You can ask Walmart whether the shipment can be stopped, but support may not be able to intercept it.

If the package arrives, the issue has usually become a return question:

  1. Open the order and review the available return options.
  2. Check the item's return deadline and any exclusions.
  3. Keep the item, packaging, and accessories in the condition required by the return instructions.
  4. Save the return tracking number or store receipt.
  5. Contact Walmart again if the order was supposed to be canceled but was delivered.

Ignoring the delivery doesn't guarantee a quick refund. A return submitted through the order page is easier to document and track.

Why Walmart may cancel an order automatically

The cancellation email or order page should provide the most specific reason. Possible categories include:

Walmart's help page specifically mentions that an older browser or app version can contribute to cancellation. It also explains that a temporary authorization hold may appear when an order is placed.

An automatic cancellation doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong. Before trying again, update the Walmart app or use a current browser, check that the billing information matches your card issuer's records, and review any quantity limits or seller details. If the card has a payment problem, resolve that with the issuer before resubmitting.

Don't immediately create a second order while the first order's status and payment are unclear. Two orders can temporarily tie up funds, even if one is later canceled.

Walmart cancellation refunds: pending holds versus posted charges

A canceled order can appear differently on your card or bank account:

What you see What it usually means What to do
A pending transaction The bank may be holding funds temporarily to authorize the order Ask the bank how long authorization holds usually remain
A posted charge followed by a cancellation Walmart needs to process a refund or reversal Keep the cancellation confirmation and monitor the card
A refund listed by Walmart but not visible yet The refund may still be moving through the bank or card network Check the account for up to seven business days
Only one item canceled in a multi-item order The remaining items may still be active Review each item's status and the revised order total

Walmart says credit and debit card refunds can take up to seven business days. That's a processing estimate; your bank may display the transaction on a different schedule.

If the transaction is still marked pending, it may be an authorization hold rather than a refund that is late. Walmart's guidance says the bank may remove the hold according to its own policies and procedures. Contact the bank with questions about the hold.

If the charge is posted and the refund is still missing after the stated timeframe, contact Walmart first. Provide the order number, cancellation date, amount, payment type, and any confirmation or support reference. Don't send a full card number in a chat message.

How to challenge an unresolved Walmart credit-card charge

Start with Walmart for a normal cancellation, missing refund, or delivery problem. Ask for a written explanation and keep the chat transcript or email.

If a charge posted to a credit card for an order you canceled or never received, it may qualify as a billing error. The FTC's billing-error guidance says to:

The FTC notes that some issuers may extend the 60-day period when a shipment is delayed, but you shouldn't wait to contact the issuer. These billing-error timelines apply to credit cards. Debit, prepaid, and other payment methods can have different procedures and deadlines.

If you never placed the Walmart order, tell the card issuer it's an unauthorized transaction and use the issuer's fraud process rather than a billing-error explanation.

Does the three-day cooling-off rule cancel a Walmart order?

Usually, no. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule covers certain sales made in a home, workplace, dormitory, or temporary location. It generally does not create a three-day cancellation period for a standard Walmart purchase made online.

For an ordinary Walmart order, the controls are:

  1. Walmart's order status and cancellation option.
  2. The item's return terms if it has shipped or arrived.
  3. Your card issuer's dispute process if a valid refund isn't provided.
  4. Any additional rights under the law of your state.

This is general U.S. consumer information, not legal advice. A state consumer-protection office or qualified attorney may be appropriate if the matter involves deception, repeated billing, or a substantial disputed amount.

Marketplace orders and third-party sellers

A Walmart Marketplace order may be sold or fulfilled by a third-party seller. Check the order page for the seller name and fulfillment arrangement before deciding whom to contact.

Save:

Use Walmart's order support tools so the request is connected to the transaction. A seller's performance target is not the same as a guaranteed customer cancellation right, so don't rely on unofficial websites for cancellation deadlines or refund promises.

Canceling Walmart+ separately

Canceling a Walmart order does not cancel Walmart+. The membership is a separate transaction. To manage it, open the Walmart+ section of your account and look for the membership management or cancellation option. Save the confirmation and check the next billing date.

If the membership cancellation doesn't appear to take effect, contact support with the confirmation and the date you submitted the request. Walmart's Walmart+ FAQ contains the current membership information.

What to save

Keep these records until both the order and the money are settled:

If the cancel option is still visible, use it now and verify the resulting status. If it has disappeared, contact Walmart promptly; if a posted charge remains after Walmart's refund timeframe, contact Walmart and then the card issuer if needed.
