If your Walmart order is late, first find out what happened to each item. It may still be preparing, delayed with the carrier, marked delivered but missing, or sold by a Marketplace seller. That status affects whether cancellation, a replacement, a refund, or an investigation makes sense.

Don't assume a late order earns an automatic 10%, 15%, or 25% credit. Walmart may offer a courtesy adjustment, but the outcome can depend on the item, seller, shipping terms, and reason for the delay.

What to do first

  1. Save the delivery promise. Screenshot the promised or estimated date, delivery window, current status, and tracking events before they change.
  2. Review every item. One Walmart order can be split into multiple shipments, each with its own tracking number and date.
  3. Identify the seller. Check whether Walmart or a Marketplace seller sold and fulfilled the item.
  4. Contact Walmart from the order page. Use the chat or phone option shown in Walmart Help. Say that the promised date has passed and request a specific outcome.
  5. Keep the case details. Save the interaction number, chat transcript, promised refund or credit, and any follow-up email.

Ask for the result you actually want: a confirmed delivery date, a replacement, cancellation and a refund, or a review for a courtesy credit. "Compensation" by itself can lead to a vague answer.

Which date and status matter?

The date shown at checkout or in your order history may be an estimate, not a guaranteed arrival date. A shipping promise, an estimated arrival date, and a scheduled grocery delivery window may have different terms. Read the wording carefully and save it.

A carrier delay after shipment is also different from Walmart or a seller missing its promised shipping timeframe. That distinction can affect whether cancellation is still possible and whether the federal online-order rule applies.

The most common outcomes are:

Walmart+ membership or a "two-day shipping" label shouldn't automatically be treated as a late-delivery payout. Check the current Walmart+ terms and the terms attached to the specific order. If support says a guarantee applies, ask which term applies to your shipment and request that the resolution be recorded in the case notes.

Check the tracking details

In the Walmart app or website:

  1. Open Purchase History or Orders.
  2. Select the affected order.
  3. Expand the order to see the status and tracking number for each item.
  4. Compare the latest carrier scan with the original delivery date.
  5. Look for a revised date, a split shipment, or a Marketplace seller.

If Walmart shows a carrier tracking number, enter that number on the carrier's website. You can also use 17TRACK's Walmart tracking page, but 17TRACK says a Walmart order number usually can't be used as a carrier tracking number. Use the carrier number instead.

A status such as "label created" may mean the carrier hasn't received or scanned the parcel. "In transit" means the carrier has recorded movement, but it doesn't promise delivery that day. When the promised date has passed and the tracking has no useful movement, contact both the carrier and Walmart. The carrier may be able to locate the package; Walmart or the seller normally handles the refund or replacement decision.

What to send Walmart support

Have these details in front of you:

A clear message could look like this:

My order number is [number]. The order showed delivery by [date], but item [name] has not arrived and tracking says [status]. Please confirm whether it is still shipping. I would like [cancellation and a full refund, a replacement, or a new delivery date]. If a late-delivery credit is available for this order, please review that too.

Before the conversation ends, ask for the:

If an agent promises a refund or credit, save the transcript or confirmation email. The case number and amount will help if the adjustment doesn't appear.

When a refund is more likely

A late arrival alone doesn't guarantee a full refund. Your request is stronger when the order was never shipped, never arrived, or contains an item that is missing, wrong, damaged, or unusable.

The seller never shipped the order

For most U.S. online merchandise orders, the Federal Trade Commission says that a seller generally must ship within the timeframe it promised. If it can't, the seller must generally notify you of the delay and give you the chance to cancel for a full refund.

Read the FTC's guidance on online orders that never arrive. Ask Walmart or the Marketplace seller whether the order is still active, lost, or canceled. If you no longer want it, say so clearly rather than accepting an open-ended revised date.

This rule doesn't create a fixed percentage payment for inconvenience, and it doesn't mean every late item qualifies for a full refund after it arrives.

The item arrived late but is usable

A late, usable item normally doesn't result in an automatic full refund. You can ask for a goodwill credit or a review of any shipping charge, but Walmart or the seller may decline or offer a different adjustment.

If you return the item, the ordinary return terms may control the refund. Keep the delay and return issues separate when explaining what you want.

An item is missing, wrong, damaged, or spoiled

Report the affected item through the order page as soon as possible. For groceries, photograph damaged packaging, spoiled food, temperature-sensitive items, or incorrect substitutions. List each affected item rather than describing the entire order generally.

Ask whether Walmart will issue a refund, replacement, or other adjustment for those items. Don't assume that a delayed grocery order qualifies for a refund of the entire order, or that a delivery fee or tip is included. Ask about those charges separately.

A Marketplace seller handled the order

Check the seller's name and whether Walmart or the seller handled fulfillment. Marketplace orders can have different shipping, cancellation, and return terms.

Start through Walmart's order-support route so the order information is attached. If Walmart directs you to the seller, keep that conversation and any seller response with your records.

Can you cancel a late Walmart order?

If the order is still being prepared, try the cancellation option in the order details. If the button is gone, contact support and explain that the promised timeframe has passed and you want to cancel.

Once a package has shipped, cancellation may no longer be available. Ask whether it can be intercepted, canceled, or returned after delivery. Don't refuse a package without first confirming how Walmart will process the refund; a refusal can create a return delay and may not, by itself, trigger a refund.

For a covered U.S. online merchandise order, the FTC says that a seller unable to ship within the promised timeframe generally must provide a delay notice and an opportunity to cancel for a full refund. That is a cancellation and refund right in the circumstances covered by the rule, not a late-delivery bonus.

Refund timing and temporary payment holds

A pending card amount may be a temporary authorization hold rather than a completed charge. Walmart's Temporary Holds and Charges guidance says Walmart charges the final order total when an order is picked up, delivered, or shipped. It also says:

The clock starts when Walmart processes the refund, not necessarily when you first report the late delivery. Check whether the amount is pending, posted, reversed, or listed as a separate refund. If Walmart's stated period has passed, ask for the refund reference and then contact your card issuer.

The tracking says "delivered," but the package is missing

A delivered scan changes the problem from an ordinary transit delay to a nonreceipt investigation. Report it promptly:

  1. Check the porch, side door, garage, mailbox, package room, and the delivery instructions.
  2. Review the carrier's delivery photo or location details, if available.
  3. Ask household members, neighbors, a building manager, or a front desk.
  4. Contact the carrier and Walmart to report nonreceipt.
  5. Ask Walmart to open an investigation and give you a case number.
  6. If theft is suspected, consider a police or building report if it is useful for your records or required by an insurer.

Keep the tracking page, delivery photo, order details, and every support message. Don't describe an authorized purchase as fraud merely because it wasn't received.

Using a credit-card dispute

Treat a card dispute as a last resort after giving Walmart or the seller a reasonable chance to fix a non-delivery. If the order never arrived and the charge appears on a credit-card statement, the FTC says you can dispute it as a billing error.

The FTC advises sending the dispute within 60 days of the statement date on which the error first appeared and following the card issuer's required process. Use the number on the back of the card and ask where billing-error disputes must be sent.

Include:

This process applies to a credit-card billing dispute, not automatically to every payment method. Debit and prepaid-card procedures differ, so contact the issuer promptly and ask which nonreceipt process applies. A complaint to the FTC or a state consumer-protection office may document a pattern or suspected scam, but it doesn't guarantee an individual refund.

Frequently asked questions

Does Walmart automatically give 10% or 15% for a late delivery?

No fixed percentage should be assumed. Walmart or a Marketplace seller may offer a courtesy credit, but eligibility and amount can vary by order.

How long should you wait before contacting Walmart?

Contact support when the promised date or delivery window has passed. Contact it sooner if tracking shows a problem, the item is time-sensitive, or grocery products may spoil. There is no universal 48-hour waiting rule for every Walmart order.

Can you get a full refund if an order is late?

Possibly, especially if the order never arrives or you cancel after the seller misses a promised shipping timeframe. A usable item that arrives late doesn't automatically qualify for a full refund.

What should you do about a late Walmart grocery delivery?

Report missing, incorrect, damaged, or spoiled items through the order page promptly. Take photos, identify each affected item, and request a refund or replacement. Ask separately about delivery fees or tips.

Does Walmart+ guarantee compensation for a late order?

Don't assume it does. Review the current Walmart+ and order-specific terms, then ask support which benefit or guarantee applies to the shipment.

Save the order-status screenshot first. Then contact Walmart with one specific request and leave with a case number, the promised amount or action, and a processing date.
