Yes, you can handle many routine car repairs at home. Fluid color can hint at a leak, but it isn't a reliable identification method. Manufacturers use different formulas and dyes. Yellow-green, blue, or orange fluid may be coolant, for example, but verify the source and type in the manual. A persistent rotten-egg smell can indicate a catalytic-converter or emissions problem. Don't keep driving if you smell fuel, exhaust inside the cabin, or burning electrical insulation.

Oil and filter change

The correct oil grade and capacity vary by engine. Don't assume a viscosity such as 0W-20 works in every vehicle.

Coolant, transmission fluid, and overheating

Check coolant only when the engine is cold. Never remove a radiator or expansion-tank cap from a hot, pressurized system. Use the specified coolant and mixing instructions; color alone doesn't tell you whether two products are compatible.

A low level is a symptom, not a repair. Look for wet hoses, a radiator leak, a water-pump area leak, or a sweet smell, and arrange testing if the level drops again. If the temperature gauge enters the hot zone, a temperature warning appears, or steam escapes, pull over safely, shut the engine off, and let it cool. Continuing to drive can turn a hose or thermostat problem into severe engine damage.

Transmission and CVT fluid procedures are especially vehicle-specific. Some systems are checked at a defined fluid temperature with the engine running and the vehicle level. Others have no dipstick. Use only the specified fluid, and don't perform a drain-and-fill without knowing the fill level, filter, seal, and reset procedure.

Suspension, alignment, exhaust, and major engine problems

Don't disassemble a strut or compressed spring without the proper equipment and training. A released spring can cause serious injury. Steering and suspension fasteners also require vehicle-specific torque and, in some cases, angle procedures.

Treat exhaust leaks as a health and safety problem, not merely a noise. Exhaust entering the cabin can expose occupants to carbon monoxide. A rotten-egg odor can be associated with the catalytic converter or another emissions-control component. Avoid driving until the source is repaired.

A blown head gasket may produce overheating, coolant loss, bubbles in the cooling system, contaminated oil, or unusual exhaust, but those symptoms can have other causes. Confirmation may require cooling-system pressure testing, a combustion-gas test, compression testing, or leak-down testing. Head-gasket replacement requires disassembly, surface checks, new fasteners in some engines, and an exact tightening sequence. It isn't a sensible first home repair.
