A seller's revenue, follower count, or five-star rating does not mean your order will be authentic, on time, or eligible for a refund. Before you pay, check the seller, the listing, the full cost, the delivery promise, the return terms, and the checkout method. If the purchase goes wrong, keep the evidence and use the marketplace's official order process promptly.

Those protections are company policies, not one universal U.S. guarantee. Eligibility can depend on the platform, product category, seller, delivery status, location, and payment method. This is practical consumer information, not legal advice.

Read the listing, not the success story

Overall stars and a large sales count can show that an account has been active. They still do not prove that this listing is reliable.

Read recent reviews for the same product. Repeated comments matter more than a single rant. Watch for items that arrived different from the description, counterfeit or used goods sold as new, delayed shipping, missing tracking, difficult returns, or silence after payment.

If the product is expensive, collectible, or time-sensitive, save the listing. Match the brand, model number, size, color, and condition. Check photos for stock images or inconsistencies, confirm accessories and quantity, and read any note about defects or wear. Screenshot the estimated dispatch and delivery dates; those details can change after checkout.

If a seller promises something in messages that the listing does not say, keep that thread. It can show what you believed you were buying. The platform still decides which evidence it will consider.

Add up the real cost and find the real return rules

A low item price can get expensive after shipping, taxes, import charges, handling fees, and return-shipping costs. Review those before you pay, and screenshot the checkout total plus the estimated delivery date.

A seller's "no returns" line does not settle every remedy. It also does not tell you whether a separate marketplace protection program covers an item that never arrives or differs substantially from the listing. Read the return window, qualifying reasons, condition requirements, and the steps for opening a case. Do not treat the seller's summary as the rulebook.

Confirm who fulfills the order. Some listings ship from the marketplace; others ship from an independent seller. Note the seller name, dispatch location, tracking method, and whether the order will split into multiple shipments. That changes whom you contact first if the package is late or incomplete.

Stay on the platform's checkout and inbox

Use the marketplace's approved checkout whenever you can. Pause if a seller asks you to:

Off-platform payment makes it harder to prove what you bought and which protections applied. A private promise to refund is not the same as a completed refund in your payment or order records.

Ask remaining questions in the platform's messaging system: condition, authenticity, dispatch time, included parts, and how returns work. A clear answer does not eliminate later mistakes. An evasive answer is a reason to wait, not a reason to pay first and investigate later.

What Amazon, Etsy, and eBay actually publish

These programs are not interchangeable. Use the policy attached to your order and check current eligibility before assuming a refund is available.

Platform Relevant official guidance Practical limit
Amazon Amazon's published A-to-z Guarantee help page lists conditions involving contact with the seller, delivery status, and timing. The linked page is for Amazon France and the European market. U.S. shoppers should use the Help link on their own order rather than copy those dates automatically.
Etsy Etsy says that, if an issue remains unresolved after a Help with order request and 48 hours have passed, a buyer may be able to ask Etsy to step in through How to Open a Case. Etsy's Purchase Protection Program has eligibility conditions. Late or missing items caused by a buyer's delay or refusal to pay delivery charges do not qualify under the stated program terms. Etsy also says refunds it processes must take place within 180 days of the transaction.
eBay The eBay Money Back Guarantee policy sets transaction-specific delivery and collection deadlines. The policy says an appeal may be submitted within 30 calendar days of eBay's decision. It also addresses signature confirmation for orders with a total cost of $750 or more. Follow the instructions on the specific order.
Local or other marketplaces The sources above do not establish one common U.S. refund rule for Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, Poshmark, or Depop. Open the app's current order and support pages. A local pickup, cash transaction, or off-platform payment may follow a different process.

A platform guarantee is not a credit-card billing dispute, a debit-card claim, an ACH dispute, a wire-transfer recovery request, or a peer-to-peer payment review. Each payment rail can have different procedures and deadlines.

The 48-hour wait in Etsy's case guidance, and the 48-hour seller-contact condition on Amazon's linked A-to-z page, is not a universal rule for every marketplace. It also does not cancel other timing or delivery conditions. Check the policy on your order before you wait.

If the order is late, wrong, damaged, or fake

Save or photograph the complete listing (title, description, photos, price, and delivery promise), the seller profile and relevant reviews, the order confirmation, receipt, and tracking, every message with the seller, the package, shipping label, and packing materials, and photos or video of damage, missing parts, condition, or differences from the listing. Note the date you contacted the seller and any date promised for a response.

Do not return an item until you have the platform's instructions. A return address or shipping method the seller sends informally may not satisfy the official process.

Contact the seller through the order page with a short, factual message: order number, what went wrong, what evidence you have, and the remedy you want.

Order 1234 was delivered on May 4, but the item is the wrong model and doesn't match the listing photo or description. I've attached photos. Please provide the platform-approved return instructions and a full refund through the order system.

Skip insults, threats, and unsupported accusations. Keep the exchange inside the platform so support can review it if needed.

A seller message is not a formal claim. If the issue is not resolved, open the case from the order page and upload what the form asks for. If the seller offers a refund, confirm it has actually been processed. Keep the case and payment records until the money appears. Before you close a case, check whether closing it could cut off remaining platform options.

If the marketplace process fails or the seller disappears, contact the company that processed the payment and ask which dispute or fraud procedure applies. Say exactly how you paid, and provide the order record, messages, tracking, and photos. Do not assume credit-card protections apply the same way to a debit card, bank transfer, prepaid card, wire, or peer-to-peer payment. Ask about that deadline instead of waiting indefinitely for the marketplace.

If you believe you were targeted by a scam or illegal business practice, use the Federal Trade Commission's contact and reporting guidance. The FTC directs scam reports to Reportfraud.ftc.gov. Include the seller's name or account handle, listing details, dates, payment evidence, and a clear description of what happened. An FTC report does not replace a refund request, so keep using the marketplace and payment-provider processes if your goal is to recover money.

The same FTC contact page says confidential information should be marked "Confidential" and sent by postal mail only to headquarters at 600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Do not put unnecessary sensitive information in an ordinary online complaint.

Evidence that usually matters

Problem Useful evidence Question to check
Item never arrived Order confirmation, estimated delivery date, tracking history, seller messages Has the platform's delivery deadline passed, and does the order qualify for its missing-item process?
Item is not as described Original listing, photos, model number, condition details, and pictures of the item received Does the platform treat this category of mismatch as eligible for a return, refund, or case?
Item arrived damaged Photos of the item and packaging, delivery date, and carrier record Does the platform require prompt notice or specific packaging evidence?
Missing parts or incomplete shipment Packing slip, package photos, listing quantity, and messages Was the order split into multiple shipments, or was the missing item promised in the listing?
Suspected counterfeit or unsafe product Listing screenshots, seller details, authentication information, and clear photos Does the platform have a special reporting route beyond an ordinary return?
Payment scam or unauthorized transaction Receipt, account statement, payment method, messages, and recipient information Which bank, card, or payment-service process applies, and what deadline does it set?

What does not create a refund by itself

Sales volume and glowing reviews do not guarantee the authenticity or condition of one listing. A seller's "no returns" wording does not, by itself, answer whether the marketplace's separate protection program applies. A tracking scan is relevant, but the platform may also review the address, timing, order details, and messages.

A social-media post or direct message does not replace the transaction record or official case process. Filing an FTC complaint does not substitute for contacting the seller, marketplace, bank, or payment provider. A deadline on Etsy, Amazon, or eBay should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Local pickup and social marketplaces

For Facebook Marketplace and other local or social selling services, start with the transaction page's current terms. The sources reviewed here do not establish one standard U.S. buyer-protection rule for every service.

For local pickup, inspect the item before handing over money, confirm the exact product and condition, and keep a written record of the agreed price. Do not send a deposit merely because a listing looks popular. If you use an online checkout, save the receipt and make sure the payment is connected to the order.

For shipped purchases, keep the conversation in the official channel and do not accept a change in payment instructions from an account that looks different from the original seller. If the seller pressures you to act immediately, pause and verify the order details.

Common sticking points

A high seller rating can be useful context. It does not guarantee that the product is genuine, that delivery will occur, or that a platform case will be approved. The listing, order records, evidence, and applicable policy control the review.

There is no universal 48-hour waiting rule. Etsy's case guidance uses a 48-hour period after a Help with order request, and Amazon's linked A-to-z page includes a 48-hour seller-contact condition. Etsy's How to Open a Case page also refers to a seven-day period after purchase. Check the combination that applies to your order, and contact the payment provider promptly if a separate deadline may apply.

Start with the platform's order message or Help with order flow so the contact is recorded. If the seller does not resolve the issue, use the formal case route. Contact your bank or payment provider promptly as well if fraud is suspected or a platform deadline is approaching.

Marketplace protections are not available for every purchase. Product category, delivery status, order value, seller location, payment method, buyer conduct, and timing can affect eligibility. Read the policy linked to the order instead of relying on a general seller promise or an old social-media post.

If you shared sensitive information with a seller, change any reused password, monitor the affected account, and contact the relevant financial institution or payment provider promptly. Preserve the messages and report suspected fraud through the FTC's reporting route and the platform's support system.

Before you pay, screenshot the listing, checkout total, and delivery estimate, then open the protection policy on that order. If you already have a problem, message the seller through the order page today, save the files, and check both the marketplace deadline and the deadline on the payment method you used.
