For a U.S. purchase made with Afterpay, the retailer decides whether the item qualifies for a return. The retailer's deadline, exclusions, condition rules, and refund options apply. Afterpay doesn't take the merchandise or decide whether the retailer accepts it. It can adjust the payment order only after the merchant processes a refund in its own system.

A return request also doesn't automatically pause scheduled installments. Until the Afterpay app shows a changed schedule or Afterpay gives you different instructions, keep the existing payments current.

What controls an Afterpay return?

Two separate processes are involved:

Check the retailer's policy for:

There isn't one Afterpay return window for every U.S. purchase. Don't assume that you have 30 days unless the retailer's own terms say so.

Afterpay's official return and refund guidance says the merchant must process the refund in its system first.

How to return an Afterpay purchase

1. Read the retailer's terms

Look on the retailer's website, order confirmation, receipt, or packing slip. Pay particular attention to the deadline, item condition, exclusions, and the type of remedy offered.

Clearance items, personalized goods, intimate products, and worn clothing may have different terms from regular merchandise. A general promise such as "easy returns" isn't a substitute for the actual conditions.

2. Open the return with the merchant

Use the retailer's required return channel and provide the order number. Tell the retailer that the purchase was made with Afterpay.

Before sending the item, ask whether the return has been approved and whether the retailer will issue a monetary refund to the Afterpay order. An exchange or store credit won't necessarily reduce the original payment order.

3. Send the item as instructed

Use the retailer's label or approved shipping method when required. Keep the tracking number, shipping receipt, return authorization, and photographs showing the item's condition and packaging.

The merchandise goes back to the retailer, not to Afterpay.

4. Confirm the refund was actually processed

A tracking scan or "return received" message only shows what happened to the package. It doesn't necessarily confirm that the merchant has submitted a refund.

Ask the retailer for:

Save the merchant's email or chat transcript.

5. Check the Afterpay order

Review the order in the Afterpay app after the merchant processes the refund. Look at both the total balance and the next scheduled installment.

If a payment date arrives while the balance still looks unchanged, don't assume the return canceled it. Follow the existing schedule unless Afterpay confirms a pause or the app shows a change.

How a refund changes Afterpay payments

Full refunds

Once Afterpay applies a full merchant refund, the remaining order balance should be cleared. If you've already made one or more installments, review the order details and associated payment method to see how the amount already paid is recorded.

A retailer's confirmation can help Afterpay trace the transaction if the old balance remains visible. Keep the refund amount, processing date, and reference number.

Partial refunds

A partial refund lowers the amount owed, but there isn't a fixed rule for which installment disappears. The result can depend on the refund amount, payments already collected, and the status of the order.

For example, a $60 refund on a $240 purchase reduces the purchase balance by $60. Afterpay may lower future installments or otherwise revise the schedule. Check the updated order instead of expecting a particular payment to vanish.

Exchanges and store credit

An exchange usually leaves the original Afterpay order in place because the retailer hasn't sent a monetary refund through Afterpay. Store credit works the same way unless the merchant separately refunds the original transaction.

Ask the retailer how it will handle the Afterpay order before accepting store credit. If you expected money back, get the answer in writing.

How long does an Afterpay refund take?

Afterpay doesn't publish one return-to-refund deadline that applies to every U.S. retailer. The timing depends on the handoffs between you, the merchant, and Afterpay.

The process generally looks like this:

  1. You submit the return under the retailer's policy.
  2. The retailer receives or reviews the item if its policy requires that step.
  3. The retailer processes the refund in its system.
  4. Afterpay updates the order.

The date the merchant processes the refund matters more than the day you dropped off the package. A retailer can confirm that it received a return without having submitted the payment refund yet.

If the merchant says the refund is complete but your Afterpay order still shows the old balance:

  1. Ask the merchant to confirm the amount, processing date, and Afterpay transaction reference.
  2. Compare those details with the order in the Afterpay app.
  3. Contact Afterpay through the order's support options and provide the merchant's confirmation.
  4. Keep checking the schedule until the account reflects the adjustment.

A promise to "issue a refund soon" isn't proof that the refund has already been submitted.

Special situations

Canceling before shipment

Contact the retailer immediately. A cancellation works only if the merchant accepts it and sends the cancellation or refund through its system. If the order has shipped, the retailer may require its standard return process instead.

Damaged or defective items

Photograph the item, packaging, shipping label, and damage before returning anything. Notify the retailer promptly and ask whether it wants the item returned, inspected, repaired, replaced, or refunded.

The retailer's warranty and return terms, along with any applicable U.S. consumer protections, may affect the available remedy. Afterpay doesn't decide whether a product is defective.

If the retailer agrees to refund you, confirm that it processed the refund against the Afterpay order. If it refuses to help, ask for the reason in writing and keep the purchase, warranty, delivery, and communication records.

Goods that never arrived

A missing delivery isn't the same as a change-of-mind return. Afterpay recommends contacting the merchant first and requesting tracking information. The merchant's contact details should be available in the order details.

If the merchant doesn't resolve the problem, use Afterpay's order dispute process. Its guidance for goods that haven't arrived says refunds are applied after the dispute is resolved.

Keep the order confirmation, promised delivery date, tracking history, and messages with the seller.

Gifts

The purchaser's Afterpay account is tied to the installment schedule, so a gift recipient may need the purchaser's help to start the return. A gift receipt may also be necessary under the retailer's policy.

Before returning the gift, find out whether the retailer will issue a refund, exchange, or store credit. Keep copies of the order, return, exchange, or store-credit records, and continue the scheduled payments while the retailer reviews the return unless the account has already been adjusted.

Common questions

Does Afterpay have a 30-day return policy?

No. Afterpay doesn't impose one universal 30-day return period on every U.S. purchase. The retailer sets the deadline and eligibility rules.

Can I return an item directly to Afterpay?

No. Start with the retailer. The retailer receives the merchandise and must process any refund before Afterpay can update the payment order.

Will returning an item stop my payments?

Not by itself. A pending return or refund request doesn't automatically pause installments. Check the app and keep the schedule current until the order changes or Afterpay tells you otherwise.

How does a partial refund affect the plan?

It reduces the total amount owed. The remaining installments may be recalculated based on the refund and payments already made. There is no dependable percentage rule that identifies which installment will disappear.

Is store credit the same as an Afterpay refund?

No. Store credit can be useful at the retailer, but it doesn't necessarily reduce the original Afterpay order. Confirm the payment effect before accepting it.

What to do if the return is stuck

Escalate in this order:

  1. Retailer: Ask whether it accepted the return and whether it actually submitted the refund.
  2. Afterpay: Send the order number, merchant confirmation, refund amount, processing date, tracking record, and screenshots showing the unchanged balance.
  3. Payment provider or card issuer: Contact it about a separate unexplained charge or payment problem, rather than treating that contact as proof that the retailer return was resolved.
  4. Consumer protection office: If the retailer won't honor its published policy or address a documented defective-product problem, consider contacting the appropriate state consumer-protection agency.

If your next installment is approaching, make the scheduled payment unless the app has revised it or Afterpay has confirmed a change. Keep the return tracking, merchant confirmation, and screenshots until the order balance is correct.
